Luxembourg is situated between Belgium, France and Germany in central Europe. The country is 84km (51.7miles) long and 52km (32 Miles) wide, covering an area of 2586 square kilometres (999 square miles) with a population of approximately 459 500.
Luxembourg is split into two regions; the Eisleck or Oesling in the North and the good country in central and south Luxembourg. This area is bordered in the East by the wine-producing valley of the Moselle. One third of the country is made up of woodlands and hills providing dramatic landscapes.
Luxembourg is a small country being known for it's residents tri-lingual ability due to the location of the country. Luxembourg also has the highest number of forgeiners in Europe residing in the country.

Food in Luxembourg is a combination of German and Belgium cuisine with some wonderful dishes using fish such as trout, pike and crayfish. Luxembourg also has some delicious pastries with Kirsch added to the babas or fruit cups. Some speciality dishes are Carre de porc fume (smoked pork and braod beans or sauerkraut, Cochon de lait en gelée (jellied suckling pig) Jambon d'Ardennes (famous smoked Ardennes ham). Restaurants in Luxembourg are similar to those in the rest of Europe offering a variety of international cuisne as well as their locally produced wine (Moselle) and beers.

Hotels are not graded as such, but every establishment offering accommodation falls into a specific class, which specifies strict criteria regarding facilities offered.

Weather in Luxembourg

The climate in Luxembourg is variable so it's best to be prepared for all types of weather throughout the year. That said,the most reliable weather is from May to October. There is no special rainy season. Winter is wet, with snow not usually settling for long except in the high country. Lows of 5 with highs of 23 in the summer months.

Luxembourg Banks and Currency

As a member of the European Union, Luxembourg has been part of the Economic and Currency Union, which introduced the EURO as common currency - since 1.1. 2002. The Euro is subdivided into 100 cents

All the major international brands of plastic - MasterCard, Visa and American Express - are recognised but not yet widely accepted, except at major hotels, gas stations and department stores. ATMs are everywhere throughout Luxembourg and you should have no problem accessing your credit or debit account back home. Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks and special exchange shops in large towns.

Banks are generally open from 9AM to 12Noon and from 2PM to 4PM Monday to Friday. They are closed Saturdays, Sundays and on legal holidays.

Visa Requirements for Luxembourg

EU citizens can enter on an official identity card. Americans, Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders and Japanese just need a valid passport (no visa).

Driving in Luxembourg
There are no tolls in Luxembourg so all roads can be driven on without charge. Take care when overtaking - allow more space between you and the car in front so you can see further down the road ahead. Luxembourg has similar drink driving laws to the UK, only allowing 0.8 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood.
Seat belts front and rear are obligatory everywhere. Speed limits, shown below, are implemented rigorously. Radar traps are frequent. Remember - Speeding and other traffic offences are subject to extremely heavy on-the-spot fines.
