Where to visit in New York State?

Take a trip out to Long Island,

The Hampshire’s and the now famous coastal beach resort of Montauk (Boxset series The affair) this part of the state is home to many of the rich and famous and their mansions, think of the film “the Woolf of Wall Street” add to these awesome vineyards and great restaurants and you will understand why room rates are so high in peak season.

It’s the equivalent to the Cotswolds in the UK, not many buildings are over two stories tall, ranging from traditional clapboard to old red brick. You could think you were in leafy England but the many American flags are an instant reminder

Long Island offers a beach escape, state parks with many walking and biking trails, a pull for keen fishermen, high-end boutiques for the larger purse and a public golf course for those avid golfers.

The beaches and chill out areas in hotels and bars will have you reaching for your book and finding a quiet spot to relax.

  • A visit to the finger lakes will not disappoint with its many villages and waterfalls around a selection of lakes all on the doorstep of Letchworth Park, they say it’s the Grand Canyon of the East, with a feel of the Lake District in the UK.
  • The area gets its name from the long, thin lakes, which on a map look like the fingers of a hand.
  • The city of Ithaca is home to Cornell University and its Johnson Museum of Art.
  • In and around the area of the fingers look out for the many stunning gorges and waterfalls that can be found.

Is it worth driving to Niagara Falls from New York?

The drive from New York to Niagara Falls is roughly 8 hours. It’s not a scenic route and would only be worth considering with a stop off in the Finger Lakes or Catskills area. Skaneateles is a lovely town to stop off on the northeast of the Finger Lakes as is Ithaca in the South and Penn Yan in the south West.
When visiting Niagara on the American side the choice of hotels is mainly Casino hotels which are large and brash. For smaller cosier options look at the many bed and breakfasts available down by the shore. If you have time drop down to Niagara on the Lake and spend a couple of days exploring this beautiful town on the lake. Spring and summer in particular in Niagara on the Lake as it is in full bloom of its floral displays.
