Montauk New York a quaint coastal beach resort a 2-hour 40-minute drive from New York or 3 hours by train. Made famous by the box set series “The Affair” which drove the locals mad whilst filming took place. It offers a beach escape combined with a visit to The crazy city of New York.
Where is Montauk New York?
Montauk is located at the very end of Long Island which is home to many of the rich and famous with properties valued in excess of $30 million dollars. Don’t expect to find cheap accommodation here as in peak season the demand is high, as are the room rates. Just a 2 hours 40-minute drive from New York City to Montauk or a train ride of just over 3 hours. In the summer months, this is a perfect beach escape from the city. What accommodation is there in Montauk New York?
In recent years Montauk has seen an investment of new owners and more modern accommodation. Boutique hotels offer comfort and casual lodging with cute added extras such as fire pits, heated swimming pools and complimentary bicycles to get around town.
We visited the area in mid-October just as the season was coming to a close. The weather was mild with blue skies and warm sunshine, perfect for exploring. Some of the hotels had already closed for the season but all the restaurants and shops were still open and traffic was lighter than in the summer months.
Room rates are half the price at this time of year and there are often specials of pay for 2 nights and stay for 3 which is excellent value.
What is there to do in Montauk New York?
Montauk has much to offer and a rental car will help you to get out and explore the many other towns such as Sag Harbor, Southampton and East Hampton with their many cute shops and independent restaurants.
Take a visit to Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum which is located inside New York states oldest Lighthouse dating back to 1796 and climb the spiral staircase.
In the summer head on to the beach and surf the waves or take a visit to Deep Hollow Ranch and saddle up like a real Cowboy (or Girl) for a beach or trail ride.
If you love your beer then take a visit to the Montauk Brewery and try one of their local beers. I can highly recommend the Pumpkin Beer!
If you love fresh seafood then a visit to the Inlet Seafood Restaurant is a must. The inlet is owned by six fishermen and from here you can watch the fishermen unload their catch less than 150 feet from the Inlet’s kitchen. This boat to table kitchen concept restaurant boasts the best sushi around.
You can even take the ferry from just outside Sag Harbour to Shelter Island for a visit to the island or carry on to the next ferry on Shelter Island and cross to Greenport which will take you to the North Fork of Long Island. From here you can cross over into Massachusetts and visit the quaint town of Mystic.
The ferries from Sag Harbour to Shelter Island run daily every 10 minutes $15 one way or $18 return. From Orient Point to New London the crossing is $79 one way and takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes, advanced booking is recommended. Do you need a rental car on Long Island?
If you choose to visit without a car there are many taxis to get around but be aware it ’s not called Long Island for anything, it does take time to get around. Some hotels have bicycles available for you to use and if not there is a rental shop in town that you can rent from just $15
What activities are there to do on Long Island?
There are many walks to be explored in the state parks on Long Island as well as the beautiful beaches. The golf course is open to the public with reasonable prices of just $45 per round. If fishing is your thing, you will be at home here with the choice of boat charters to organised fishing days.
At night the many bars and restaurants offer an array of cuisines including locally caught fish. The muscles and clams are particularly recommended, with clam chowder on most menus. Live music and entertainment can be found at various venues including some of the hotels. The Gig Shack is popular with the locals with live music and or chill out playlists by European DJ’s such as Klingande.
