The trip was absolutely amazing, if very tough going! I'd really recommend seeing Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail rather than just getting a bus ride to the top as some people do.
We got to see some amazing Inca sites along the way that we wouldn't have seen otherwise. However, I didn't appreciate how physically fit you had to be to undertake the trail.
I think the GAP brochure says something like, if you can climb several sets of stairs without getting out of breath then you'll be able to do the hike, which is underplaying it slightly! The porters and guide were amazing - really knowledgeable and helpful. The days we spent in the Amazon jungle were a fantastic experience too - the eco-lodge was beautiful and again the guide was fantastic.
If I were to recommend doing anything differently it would be to miss out Lima - it wasn't a very nice city and there's nothing really to do there, instead I would spend more time in Cuzco which was a really interesting little town with a chilled out atmosphere and lots to see and do.
