Golf in South Africa in the Stellenbosch Golf area is actually one of the best areas to choose for a golf trip for couples or even with a group of friends. The golf courses are immaculate and they are within a short distance of one another making the area an ideal Choice to stay at one resort and play at another Golf Course.
Golf starts very early in South Africa with tee times from 7am in the morning. All golf courses have a compulsory 15 – 30 minute stop after the 9th hole. This allows players to reset and any slow play is corrected and everyone gets the chance for a refreshment break. It seems to work as all our rounds of golf was within 4 hours and any slow play was only encountered for a few holes.
Stellenbosch Golf in South Africa is very reasonably priced and open to the public. Just make sure in the high season you book your tee times in advance as the courses can be very popular and busy with resident golf property owners.
We combined golfing with wine tasting which made for a fabulous stay in this area. There are deffinitely more vineyards than golf courses so after a round of golf you really are spolit for choice. Our top 4 golf courses in the area woud allow you a 3 night stay here for golf and wine tasting.
- DeZalze Golf is a nice flat course which is suitable for walking and located just outside Stellenbosch. Ideal for visiting the town and the surrounding area. The estate of DeZalze offers great accommodation for golfers and has a wonderful restaurant on site so perfect for a couple of nights stay.
- Arabella golf is further down the coast towards Hermanus and offers stunning views out to the ocean. We started out the back nine on the 10th tee, this section of the golf course is home to some amazing golf properties. Some of the homes were the biggest golf properties I think we saw on a golf course before. I highly recommended the hotel which is 5-star accommodation, a family resort with lots of activities available. The great thing about this, of course, is this location to Hermanus which is a coastal area popular at certain times of the year when whale watch season is active. The best time for whale watching season in the months of July and October.
- Erin Vale golf course which is one of the oldest golf courses in the Southern Cape is a typical style of golf course with a very British influence. On the day we played there were about 60 people playing bridge in the clubhouse. The course is very mature, immaculate and offers a lovely round of golf. It is equally a beautiful course especially the last 3 finishing holes which are quite stunning.
- Pearl Valley Golf course is North of Stellenbosch and worth a drive out to for any regular golfer. Situated in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley, an iconic Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. There are a variety of tees to choose from depending on your golfing ability. Well-positioned between the mountains with some tricky fairway bunkers and short tees. The golf carts have GPS capability and they guide you through the course, which is a great help. Avoid weekends for slow play.
When golfing in and around Stellenbosch take advantage of this lovely are by golfing every other day. You can then take the time to relax enjoy your hotel and visit the vineyards in this stunning Wineland area. We often skipped the 19th hole and headed to a vineyard for the afternoon wine tasting. In the Western Cape, wine tasting is between the hours of 10 and 4 p.m. although some of the vineyards do stay open late in the summer months so that you can enjoy wine tasting as the sunsets. It really added to our experience of Stellenbosch Golf.
Wine tasting in the Stellenbosch area is very reasonable with wine tasting sessions costing between £5 to £7 sterling for a tasting session of about 6 different wines. The great thing with wine tasting is there is no need to book and there are so many vineyards to choose from. You just need to decide whether you want red, white or sparkling.
For our research when looking at Stellenbosch Golf, we used a fabulous book by a couple of local ladies that have written about the various Vineyards of the area. We were not disappointed with the choice or their recommendations on any of the ones we visited.
